2026 Summer Season Dates

Because many of our lifeguards are FISD students and their availability during finals week is not yet confirmed, our official pool opening date for 2026 is still pending.

We will potentially open the pools on May 23 and May 24, 2026, however this will depend on lifeguard availability. We will announce the confirmed opening date as soon as staffing is finalized.

Regardless of early opening dates, the pools are scheduled to open for the season on May 30, 2026.

We will provide updates on more accurate dates as we get closer to the summer opening.

FAQ

Why Have We Reached Maximum Capacity?

  • We are required to follow the American Red Cross standard of 1 lifeguard on surveillance per every 25 patrons in the facility.
  • Once maximum capacity has been reached, we are required to operate on a 1 in one out system.
  • Town Pool frequently reaches maximum capacity Tuesday - Friday from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm.
  • Park Pool frequently reaches maximum capacity Monday, Wednesday - Friday 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm & Saturdays 1:00 pm - 6:00 pm.
  • Maximum capacity can change frequently and quickly; therefore, we encourage patrons to call in advance during these peak hours to see if capacity has been reached.
  • While we try our best to staff as many lifeguards as possible at our aquatic facilities, we have a total of 18 shifts to fill weekly. We thank you for your ongoing attendance at the pools and patience when we reach capacity.

Why Are Lifeguards On Break/Off Stand?

  • Texas Administrative Code states that lifeguards can only be on surveillance for a maximum of 60 minutes. This ensures that lifeguards are staying alert and gives them a small window for a break.
  • Lifeguards that are off stand are still working. While they are not on surveillance duty, these guards will respond to first aid on the deck, assist lifeguards on stand if needed, and play a vital role in our Emergency Action Plan.

Why Aren't Certain Flotation Devices Allowed?

  • American Red Cross certified facilities only allow US-Coast Guard approved life saving devices.
  • USCG approved life saving devices are rigorously tested and designed to ensure safety. Items that are not USCG approved life saving devices can deflate, pop, slip off, flip over swimmer or get away from swimmer.
  • Please note that we offer a USCG lifejacket loaner program. Simply ask the front desk for a USCG approved lifesaving device.

Why And When Do We Clear The Pool?

  • 10 minutes prior to closing to ensure that all patrons can gather their things, change or utilize the restroom before exiting the facility.
  • Lightning or Thunder. Lifeguards will clear the pool if there is thunder/lightning within a 10-mile radius of the pool, or if thunder/lightning is heard/seen. We are required to keep the pool closed for 30 minutes after last sight, sound, or strike within a 10-mile radius.
  • When wind speeds are high enough that it obstructs a lifeguard's ability to see through all layers of the water.
  • When rain is so heavy that it obstructs a lifeguard's ability to see through all layers of the water.
  • When there are bodily substances in the pool.
  • In an emergency situation.

Can I Have A Party/Bring A Group To The Pool:

  • Groups of 25 or more will be turned away during normal operating hours.
  • If your group is under 25, we cannot guarantee entry if we have reached maximum capacity.
  • If you are interested in a pool party of 25 or more, please visit our Pool Reservations page.
  • If your organization or daycare is wanting to bring children to the pool, please reach out to the Aquatics Superintendent, Courtney Pierz at Cpierz@fbgtx.org for required documentation and approval.

Why Do The Pools Close In August?

  • FISD starts school on August 12th, 2026 & most universities start school the following week.
  • The demographic of lifeguard staff that work for the City of Fredericksburg are all high school - college aged students.
  • As August approaches we start to see lifeguard staff leave early for university, and high school students start participating in extracurricular activities before school starts.
  • We are required to follow the American Red Cross standard of 1 lifeguard on surveillance per every 25 patrons in the facility.
  • Texas Administrative Code requires that all public pool facilities have adequate lifeguard staff to respond to emergency situations. Once lifeguard staff start school and extracurricular activities, we no longer have enough lifeguard staff to respond to emergency situations.

Does The City Offer Swim Lessons?

  • The City of Fredericksburg does not provide swim lessons; however, Heart of Texas Swim & Swim America utilizes Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park Pool during the summer months to offer swim lessons to children in our community.
