CITY TO PERFORM SMOKE TESTING OF SANITARY SEWER SYSTEM...

IMG_0647_thumb.jpg

Beginning on Wednesday, September 21, 2022, the City of Fredericksburg will begin smoke testing portions of the sanitary sewer system.  The utility customers that may be affected by the testing includes those in the southwestern portion of the City, including the areas of West Live Oak Street, Smokehouse Road, West Windcrest Street, Boos Lane, FM 2093, Fair Drive, Kerr Road, Pyka Road, Highway 16 South (south of Live Oak), Business Court, Gillespie County Airport, and Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park.  These tests will be taking place over the next two to three weeks, weather permitting.

A smoke test survey will assist our inspection crews in locating breaks and defects in our sanitary sewer system.  Liquid smoke is used during the process.  The smoke is forced into the sewer mains.  At any break or defect in the sanitary sewer main, the smoke will rise from the ground, alerting inspection crews of an issue at that location.  The smoke used, which will be seen coming from the vent stacks on houses or holes in the ground is non-toxic, non-staining, has no odor, is white in color, and creates no fire hazard.

Home and business owners should be aware that no smoke should enter your home or place of business unless there is defective plumbing or dried up drain traps.  It is advisable for the home or business owner to pour a gallon of water into each floor drain prior to testing.

For more information regarding this process or any questions, please contact Dennis Durst, Interim Water/Wastewater Superintendent, at (830)990-2070.

Additional information and frequently asked questions about the smoke testing process can be found on the City’s website at https://www.fbgtx.org/696/Sewer-Line-Smoke-Testing.
