The Marktplatz playground will be closed beginning on Tuesday, April 6th. City staff will begin demolition of the existing playground which will take a couple of weeks. A new playground will then be installed over the summer as weather permits. The playground area will be closed for about three to four months, depending on the weather. We will update the public as progress is made.
The new playground was jointly funded by the Market Square Redevelopment Commission and the City of Fredericksburg, as well as a grant from Game Time. The total playground cost was approximately $278,200. The grant from Game Time was $60,083. The playground will have two units: one for children 2-5 years old and one for those age 5-12 years old. It will have a poured in place surface which is the most inclusive and have several ground level components. During the time this playground is closed, park visitors are encouraged to use the new state-of-the-art playground built by the Morning Rotary Club at Old Fair Park located next to HEB.
The Market Square Redevelopment Commission is currently working on Phase II of this project which will include restrooms on the northwest corner of the square and a multi-purpose room. Fundraising for this phase is ongoing. To make a donation please visit www.fbgtx.org/1038/Donate. For additional information, contact Andrea Schmidt, Parks and Recreation Director, at (830)990-2018.
