As mandated by the Constitution, the United States conducts a count of its population once every ten years. The 2020 Census Day will be taking place on April 1, 2020, which will be the 24th time the country has counted its population since 1790. Each home will receive an invitation to respond to a short questionnaire either online, by phone, or by mail.
According to the 2020census.gov website, “The census provides critical data that lawmakers, business owners, teachers, and many others use to provide daily services, products, and support for you and your community. Every year, billions of dollars in federal funding go to hospitals, fire departments, schools, roads, and other resources based on census data.” Census results also determine the number of seats each state will have in the House of Representatives. They are also used to draw state legislative and congressional district lines.
Results of the 2020 Census will affect community funding, congressional representation, and more. Therefore a complete and accurate count is critical for individuals as well as the community as a whole. To help educate and motivate residents to participate in the 2020 Census, the City of Fredericksburg will be taking applications for a Complete Count Committee (CCC). The CCC program will be key to creating awareness and educating the community on how to participate in the census. Applicants must be residents of Gillespie County.
